Finalists from more than 20 Colorado high schools will perform poetry recitations in front of a live audience at Lakewood Cultural Center. The winner will get a trip to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C., this April, where state finalists will compete for more than $50,000 in scholarship funds. "Poetry Out Loud is an opportunity for students in Colorado to master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage," said Colorado Creative Industries Executive Director Margaret Hunt. "It's been great having the Poetry Out Loud program at Lighthouse," says Mike Henry, Executive Director of Lighthouse Writers Workshop, "engaging young people in poetry is an important part of what we do." Following state finals, the Colorado State Champion and their teacher or parent will proceed to the POL National Competition with an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. The National Competition will award a total of $50,000 in cash and school stipends, including a $20,000 award for the POL National Champion.A program of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. The aim is to help students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. In Colorado, Poetry Out Loud is sponsored and managed by Lighthouse Writers Workshop and Colorado Creative Industries. State finals are free and open to the public.
